Why Icecast?
More control over your streams
You can run several streams from the same Icecast server, with a separate URL and settings for each one. Useful if you want to broadcast different content or give listeners a choice of streams.
You can also restrict access using passwords, external authentication or country-based blocking. Handy for private streams or broadcasts that can only be heard in certain countries.

Multiple mountpoints
Run several streams on one server. Each mountpoint has its own URL and settings, so you can configure them separately.
Geo locking
Choose which countries can access your stream. You can block specific countries or allow listeners from selected locations only.
Listener authentication
Keep your stream private with usernames and passwords, or connect it to an external authentication system.
Flexible audio formats
Broadcast in MP3, AAC+ or OGG Vorbis, depending on what works best for your station and listeners.
Fallback streams
If your live source disconnects, Icecast can switch listeners to a backup mountpoint or recorded audio. They can return to the live stream when it reconnects.
Stream relaying
Relay an individual mountpoint or a whole Icecast server. With on-demand relaying, the connection starts when someone tunes in.

Icecast or Shoutcast?
Icecast is a good choice if you need multiple mountpoints, listener authentication or more control over stream settings. Shoutcast may suit you better if you want to appear in its radio directory or use software that specifically supports it.
